LD Month: Each One Teach One
LD OnLine, in honor of October's Learning Disabilities Month, provides a new article called Learning Disabilities: An Overview for our readers. This article provides the basic facts to people who are learning about learning disabilities. Please use it to educate others.
Some specific points include:
- The term "learning disabilities," according to the special education law IDEA, refers to a condition in which a child achieves less academically than one would expect. The legal definition is here.
- Academically, there are three broad categories of learning disabilities: dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia.
- Sometimes the media, the public, and even educators confuse autism with learning disabilities. However, they are separate disorders.
- Today, schools are using Response to Intervention to address the particular learning needs of children before they fall too far behind.
- Students with learning disabilities need explicit, well-sequenced instruction to succeed. Teachers often provide accommodations to help students learn in class.
Share Your Success Stories with Us
Share a way that you are thankful for learning disabilities. In November, LD OnLine shares stories from its readers that illuminate the positive side of LD. Please send us your stories, especially if:
- You are a teacher with a tale of a student's success.
- You are a parent who is proud of your LD child.
- You have a learning disability and can share your own success.
