Help Your Child Have a Happy Holiday
The holiday season is a time for family togetherness, community, and friendship. It is a time for parties, fun, and enjoyment. Unfortunately, children who struggle with social and behavioral problems can feel lonely and excluded during this happy time.
How can you, as a parent, make things easier for your child with ADHD or LD and help him or her better enjoy the holidays? The article How to Help Your Child Have a Happy Holiday, newly revised for the 2008 holiday season, has a dozen practical ideas designed for your family. Here are some of them:
- Prepare your child for events such as holiday parties.
- Teach your child the names of guests ahead of time, if possible.
- Role-play scenarios with your child.
- Make a plan to handle the situation if your child gets over-stimulated.
- Tactfully make accommodations for your child's difficulty.
- Ask your child to do good deeds and contribute to the community.
